M&S fish on GM-Free diet
Marks & Spencer today announced plans to remove GM soya and maize
from its fish feed for salmon and other farmed fish.
From May 1 all M&S fish will be fed a non-GM diet, including that
used in
sandwiches, recipe dishes and canned products.
The company has worked with the world's largest feed companies, Trouw
Aquaculture(cor) and Biomar to develop the feed.
David Gregory, head of food technology for M&S, said: "Because
of our unique
position - we only sell our own brand - we are able to control the food
chain right from the farm to the kitchen table.
"We have been working closely with all our suppliers including feed
companies, farmers and fish processors to create the first certified non
GM
diet for farmed fish.
"We are determined to respond to our customers' demand for choice
whilst
they have concerns about GM.
"This builds on our leading position regarding GM in food and animal
feed."
