Monsanto's $550M Brazil Roundup Plant Building Starts

U.S. agribusiness giant Monsanto Co will, according to this story, lay the cornerstone of its $550 million herbicide plant on Brazilian soil Friday to produce its big-selling Roundup. The story adds that the hefty investment on what is Monsanto's first herbicide raw material plant in the southern hemisphere comes despite the setbacks suffered from the prohibition of the commercial sale of genetically modified soybeans in Brazil.
The story goes on to say that Roundup is Brazil's top-selling herbicide
and widely used on on both genetically modified and non-genetically modified
organism crops in Brazil, where it is the top-selling herbicide.
In a written statement, Monsanto's executive director Gustavo Leite said
the company plans to invest a total $800 million in Brazil until 2003. This
includes the $550 million investments on the herbicide raw material plant,
located in the petrochemical hub of Camacari, in the northeastern state of
Bahia.
Production of raw materials for herbicide will start in 2001, but the
plant will only be fully operational in 2003, when production of Roundup is
scheduled to begin.
